This portrait, titled Klamath Type, depicts a man of the Klamath people of southern Oregon and northern California.

Part of Curtis’s monumental twenty-volume chronicle The North American Indian, this hand-pulled photogravure was created from the original copper plates and printed between 1911 and 1913 in a limited edition of approximately five hundred sets.

Curtis devoted more than three decades to documenting Indigenous cultures across North America—work that endures as one of the most ambitious photographic projects in American history.
